Diagnostic Network

Since 2008, through various collaborations, MAGI has developed a diagnostic network that involves the MAGI medical genetics laboratories and various clinical genetics services and specialised centres in public and private organisations. This network enables MAGI to respond efficiently to the needs of patients with genetic diseases throughout Europe.

The medical genetics laboratories and the clinical genetics services and specialised centres are organised according to the hub and spoke model. This model assumes that rare and costly skills and equipment (online centralised genetic labs or hubs), which are not found everywhere but necessarily concentrated in specialist centres, are needed to diagnose certain diseases, whereas patients can be cared for by peripheral clinics equipped and trained to formulate suspected diagnoses and to conduct follow-up (spoke centres). MAGI’s network model consists of the highly specialised laboratory (hub) available to hospitals and clinics (spokes) for consultancy and complex or rare testing of biological samples.
